Happy Nano Day 2026

Five questions. Five projects. One common dimension: Nano!

On October 9, we celebrate Nanotechnology Day—a day of action that originated in the U.S. and has since drawn global attention to the fascinating world of the smallest dimensions.

The date 10/9, written in the American format, already gives a clue:

10⁻⁹ meters is one nanometer.

This tiny scale holds a world full of fascinating research and diverse applications.

The interdisciplinary network of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) connects basic research with practical applications, bringing together disciplines that, at first glance, seem far apart:

Nano & Environment, Nano & Medicine, Nano & Drug Discovery, Nano & Optics, and Nano & Quantum Research.

Our video showcases five current SNI projects from these research areas. The projects are being carried out by research groups at the @University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), the @Paul Scherrer Institute and the @University of Basel. They range from basic research at the SNI PhD School to applied research as part of the applied Nano-Argovia program.

What do they have in common? The dimension.

Take a look inside the laboratories that are part of the SNI network and get a sense of the diversity of these very small structures.
