Tiny worlds, big impact: real-time microscopy inspires colleagues

Marcus Wyss took his colleagues from the general vocational school on a journey into the micro and nano world. He demonstrated in real time the fascinating structures that can be found in nature using a scanning electron microscope and how surfaces can be manipulated using a focused ion beam. Recently, Dr. Marcus Wyss, head of the Nano Imaging Lab at the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI), welcomed the mechanical engineering team of the general vocational school (Allgemeine Gewerbeschule). In a lecture, the nanoscientist and part-time teacher Marcus Wyss introduced his colleagues to the activities of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute at the University of Basel, reported on various research projects of the Nano Imaging Lab (NI Lab) and gave an introduction to scanning electron microscopy.
The participants particularly welcomed the real-time demonstration. From the lecture hall, Marcus Wyss operated a scanning electron microscope in the NI Lab and took all participants into the world of tiny structures. The diverse samples from the micro and nano world ranged from the compound eye of a fruit fly and the structure of an olive leaf to an integrated circuit. In addition to the beautiful images, the participants also experienced how the remote-controlled microscope can also be used to manipulate samples thanks to a focused ion beam (FIB) as Wyss demonstrated how samples can be precisely cut and coated.
The participating head of department Dario Ferraro wrote about the inspiring event for the school newsletter “AGS-Info”: “On behalf of the entire teaching staff, we would like to thank Marcus Wyss for this unique insight into a mysterious and highly complex micro and nano world.
