Risks

In many areas, nanotechnology holds out the prospect of innovations and improvements. As with other technologies, however, there are also risks, which need to be investigated as well.

In Switzerland, the national research program “Opportunities and risks associated with nanomaterials” (NFP 64) was conducted between 2010 and 2015 to examine this issue. As part of this program, scientists undertook a variety of projects to improve their understanding of the most important opportunities and possible risks associated with products based on artificial nanoparticles. Their research provides a scientific basis for the formulation of recommendations and appropriate measures to be applied when producing, using and disposing of artificial nanoparticles.

The final report and a white paper summarize results, outcome and perspective of the program.

The SNI is committed to keeping the public updated on developments in the nanosciences and nanotechnology, through the provision of objective, scientifically correct information, and to entering into constructive dialog with all stakeholders.
