- Schnupper Winter School for interested schoolchildren at the University of Basel (5 March 2025)
“You’ll gain insights into the nanoworld and learn about the latest lines of research. We’ll either come to your school or would be happy to welcome you in Basel.”
Battist Utinger and Kerstin Beyer-Hans
We regularly take part in various science exhibitions and festivals, providing insights into fascinating phenomena from the nanoworld. Here are a few examples from recent years.
On request
We organize various formats for school classes of different ages (elementary school to high school). Since the network of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute includes researchers from various disciplines, we’re able to offer talks and laboratory visits with a focus on biology, chemistry and physics. Our program also includes the “Atomic Force Microscopy” and “Discover Nano” workshops, which we offer both at schools and at the SNI. Please contact us with as much notice as possible so that we can prepare a suitable program for you.
- AFM workshop
- Introduction to the world of the atomic force microscope (AFM)
- Basics of atomic force microscopy; construction of a model AFM; taking your own measurements with our portable AFMs (introduction video)
- Discover Nano
- Various experiments that illustrate phenomena from the nanoworld and demonstrate example applications (e.g., the lotus effect, ChocoFoil)
- Lab tours – brief insights into SNI-associated laboratories in the areas of physics, chemistry, biology and pharmacy
- Internships in SNI-associated laboratories (physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacy) — immerse yourself in the practical work of researchers
- Limited number of internship places with lead times
- Change of Perspective – the artistic way to get closer to the nanosciences
- Taking photos in laboratories at the Department of Physics and turning the images into art; exhibition in the school and at the University of Basel
Those who wish to try out experiments for themselves will find numerous examples on our website. Most of these can be performed using common household materials. As well as showing you how to carry out the experiments step by step, we provide easy-to-understand scientific explanations.
